Hi there, who are you and where are you from?
My name is Fergus. I’m from London, UK.
Here’s our first ever interview with a Brit! read on to find out what went into Fergus’ ID80!
What were you looking for in your perfect keyboard? Do you think you achieved it?
No, I don’t think I’ve achieved it. Mostly just because I know my tastes will change in the future and it’s likely I’ll grow to desire a different feel and aesthetic. I’m very happy with my current board but I’m always on the lookout for something different.
Tell us about the case? What did you go for and why?
The case is a grey ID80. It wasn’t my first custom case purchase but it arrived quicker than the other group buy I entered into. It was reasonably priced and I liked the smooth curves.
What switches did you go with? Why?
I went with Zeal Roselios, 67g. Before this, I’d owned a Leopold with MX Browns and an HHKB Pro BT, and I wanted to try a silent switch next. I like heavy switches as they feel more impactful. The stabilisers are from Zeal.
How about the PCB?
The PCB is just the stock ID80 PCB from Idobao.
And of course… what keycaps are you wearing today?
GMK Violet on Cream. They’re glorious, but I’m not looking forward to them reaching that shiny GMK stage. I have another set of GMK caps and after a while, the texture seems to just sort of deteriorate, and it’s something I’m dreading.
Tell us about the Lube!
I lubed the switches with Krytox 205g0 and the stabs with dielectric grease.
Anything else went into this endgame build?
Nope, just the stock USB C cable that came with the case/PCB.
Cheeky question… how much did it all cost?
Around £375 (£110 for the case, £150 for the keycaps, £90 for the switches, ~£25 for the stabilisers).
How long did it take you to build this keyboard from start to finish?
After all the parts arrived I assembled it in one afternoon.
If you could change anything about this keyboard what would it be?
Make it immune to GMK shine
Do you have any other keyboards in the works?
I have a Zambumon Jules on order, in blue. I’ve got Aqua Zilents waiting for it and I bought into the GMK Deep Navy group buy for the keycaps.
Finally… time to promote yourself. Where can we find you online and what do you do?
I’m a web developer. You can find me online on many different services under the username ergusto.
